Kitchen and Bath Remodeling Cary NC: 2027 Trends, Costs & Permits

Share at:

About half of Cary’s housing was built before 2000. The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) puts the town’s median year built at 1999, with about 39% of homes dating from the 1980s and 1990s. That means thousands of original kitchens and hall baths are reaching the age where cabinets sag, laminate peels, and a tub nobody uses takes up half the room. If you are one of the homeowners planning that remodel now, three things are different this year: the cabinet lines released new finishes and door styles, the NKBA 2027 Kitchen Trends Report reset what designers recommend, and most imported cabinets and vanities carry a 25% tariff, with a scheduled increase to 50% delayed until January 1, 2027, except for countries that reach an agreement with the U.S. (see our bathroom cost guide).

This guide puts all three in one place for Cary and the Triangle. It covers what is new across the nine cabinet lines we sell, which 2027 kitchen and bath trends make sense in a 1990s Cary house, what remodels cost according to our kitchen and bathroom cost guides, and when the Town of Cary requires a permit. You can compare sample doors from every line we sell, and get a price, at our Cary showroom on Walnut Street.

USA Cabinet Store Cary is at 2226 Walnut St, Cary, NC 27518, open Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Sunday). Call (919) 462-7272 or book online. It is one of our 13 showrooms in seven states, and it serves homeowners across the Triangle, including Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

There are three ways to start, and all of them are free:

The in-store visit is where the releases below make sense. A door looks different under showroom light than it does in a catalog, and a stain that reads honey-warm on a phone screen can turn orange next to red oak floors. Bring a photo of your floors and, if you have them, the countertop samples you like. We carry inset, framed overlay, and frameless full-access cabinetry, so the same visit can compare a traditional Showplace inset kitchen with a handleless Bauformat run. Our cabinet brand guide has the full side-by-side.

New cabinet releases for 2026 and 2027, line by line

Cabinet manufacturers do not release on one calendar. Some announce at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in February, some publish new spec guides in spring, and the German lines show their next model year at the September kitchen fairs. The table collects what each of our nine lines has actually released or announced, checked against the manufacturers’ own sites and trade press on October 20, 2026. Where a line has announced nothing new, we say so.

New finishes, doors, and cabinet options from the nine lines USA Cabinet Store sells, with lead times from our cabinet brand guide. Lead times are typical and vary by order.
Line What is new When Typical lead time
RTA Cabinets No new colors announced. Shaker White, Shaker Grey, and Shaker Blue stay in stock locally. Ongoing In stock, days
Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Designer Stain Collection: Biscuit, Claystone, Elderberry, Dark Aqua, and Seaside Pine, plus Natural Oak, a new Signature stain. Ovela, a premium frameless plywood line with Catalina and Tuscany doors, alongside the existing Illume frameless line. Siena, a new three-piece slab door for both frameless lines. Stains reported August 2026; Ovela November 2025; Siena undated 2 to 3 weeks
Mantra Steam, a warm white with a soft gray undertone, on the Omni door. Hammock wood tone now on the Classic door. Universal Design three-drawer base and a roll-under sink base. Fall 2026 3 to 5 weeks
1951 Cabinetry Garrett Bourbon Oak and Garrett Harvest Oak finishes. 2026 spec guide In stock to about 2 weeks
Showplace and Showplace EVO Bourbon, a mid-tone brown stain for cherry, rift white oak, quartersawn white oak, and rustic alder. Wren door in overlay, inset, and EVO frameless. Nine coastal-inspired paints. Metal-frame glass doors listed on its site. Bourbon May 2026; paints December 2025; Wren August 2025; metal doors undated 6 to 8 weeks
Legacy Crafted No new release announced. No new release 5 to 7 weeks
Bertch Reedlyn reeded vanity and Walker petite-shaker vanity, Agave, Juniper, and Monsoon paints, Cashew stain, a vanity outlet drawer, and wire mesh door inserts. Bath launch April 2025; mesh inserts May 2026 7 to 9 weeks
UltraCraft Micah, Maebry, and Mason micro-frame doors, the Townes slim shaker, 11 new UltraLux acrylic colors (30 in total), and new Arctic Silver and Bronze Matte metal-door finishes. Listed as new on UltraCraft’s site (undated) 7 to 11 weeks
Bauformat Next-year program shown at its in-house show in Löhne, Germany: black hinges and interior fittings, a new front program called Miami, and an expanded RAL and NCS range of more than 4,000 shades, according to local press coverage. September 2026 10 to 14 weeks

Fabuwood: warmer stains and a frameless line

Fabuwood had the busiest year. Its Allure Galaxy shaker door has five new Designer Collection stains (Biscuit, Claystone, Elderberry, Dark Aqua, and Seaside Pine) along with Natural Oak, which Kitchen & Bath Business, reporting in August 2026, describes as Fabuwood’s lightest stain. Fabuwood also launched Ovela, which it calls a premium frameless line, built from UV-veneered plywood with dovetail drawer boxes and Blum soft-close hardware, and debuting with the Catalina and Tuscany doors. It joins Fabuwood’s existing Illume frameless line. A new door, Siena, is a three-piece slab with a matte or textured surface for both frameless lines. Ask our Cary team which Fabuwood frameless doors you can order through us. For Cary buyers this matters because Fabuwood sits in our value tier with two-to-three-week lead times, so a stained, warm-wood kitchen no longer has to mean a semi-custom budget.

Mantra and 1951 Cabinetry: new neutrals and accessible bases

Mantra’s fall 2026 update adds Steam, which Mantra calls “a perfectly balanced warm white with a soft gray undertone,” to its Omni door, and extends the Hammock wood tone to the Classic door. The more useful news is in the Universal Design range: a three-drawer base that brings everyday items within reach and a standard-height sink base with a removable front for roll-under access. Both matter if you are planning a kitchen or bath you can stay in as you age. 1951 Cabinetry’s 2026 spec guide adds two oak finishes, Garrett Bourbon Oak and Garrett Harvest Oak. 1951 is a pre-assembled stock line, and our cabinet brand guide lists it as in stock to about two weeks.

Showplace: Bourbon and the Wren door

Showplace introduced Bourbon, a mid-tone brown stain for cherry, rift white oak, quartersawn white oak, and rustic alder, in May. Showplace says it “delivers a rich, inviting color that enhances grain detail,” which makes it the first stain to ask about if white oak is on your list. Showplace added the Wren door last year, a reverse-raised panel that comes in overlay, inset, and frameless versions, and in December 2025 it added nine coastal-inspired paints, a mix of soft neutrals and blues. Its site now also lists metal-frame glass doors (undated).

Bertch, UltraCraft, Legacy Crafted, and RTA

Bertch’s April 2025 launch was mostly in the bath: the Reedlyn and Walker vanities, three paints and a stain, and a vanity drawer with a built-in outlet. In May 2026 it added wire mesh door inserts in four patterns for its Kitchen+ and Elan kitchen lines. UltraCraft lists a long set of newest additions on its own site, including micro-frame wood doors and 11 new acrylic colors, though without release dates. Legacy Crafted has not announced anything new, and our RTA line keeps its three in-stock shaker colors. That is fine. RTA sells on price and speed, and Legacy Crafted on its Pennsylvania-built wood cabinetry.

Bauformat: the 2027 model year

German kitchen makers show their next model year each September at the in-house shows in East Westphalia known as the Küchenmeile. At Bauformat’s 2026 in-house show, according to Neue Westfälische, the group switched its hinges and interior fittings to black and introduced a new front program, Miami, along with an expanded RAL and NCS range of more than 4,000 shades. Bauformat now lists its Kitchenguide Collection 2027 among its catalogs. Because Bauformat runs 10 to 14 weeks, a homeowner who orders in early 2027 is effectively buying the 2027 program, so ask our Cary team what has reached U.S. ordering before you commit to a front.

Emin’s note

Take the sample door outside before you decide. The new warm stains (Bourbon, the Garrett oaks, Natural Oak) look different in a north-facing Cary kitchen at 5 p.m. than they do under showroom LEDs. For most of our lines we can ship a sample door to your home, so check it under your own lighting. It is the cheapest way to avoid a stain you live with for 20 years.

The year’s releases on one page: warmer stains, more frameless options, and new accessible cabinet sizes.

Put the releases next to the NKBA 2027 Kitchen Trends Report, which surveyed 830 industry professionals (see also PHCPPros’ summary), and the manufacturers and designers are pointing the same way.

Start with wood. Bourbon, the Garrett oaks, Natural Oak, and Hammock are all warm wood tones, and that is where the designers are too. In the NKBA report, white oak is the top cabinet wood for 49% of designers, 34% expect natural material cabinets with no finish to be popular, and 32% each favor light and medium tones. Neutrals still lead the color ranking at 96%, unchanged from 2026, and even the new white on this list, Mantra’s Steam, comes with a soft gray undertone.

Frameless keeps growing. Fabuwood added Ovela and the Siena slab door, and UltraCraft and Bauformat keep adding fronts. That fits the NKBA finding that 85% of designers say cabinetry is being designed to hide appliances, and a frameless box gives the cleanest line for it. The detail on the new doors comes from texture: micro-frames, mesh inserts, and textured slabs.

Accessible cabinets are also showing up in regular product updates. Mantra’s fall release expanded its Universal Design selection alongside its new colors.

There is no Cary-specific trend survey, so we start from the national data and adjust it for the houses here. The Census numbers explain most of it: the median Cary home was built around 1999, and in our experience many kitchens from that era still have their original cabinets. The 2027 trends fit that house better than you might expect.

  • Zone it instead of gutting it. 81% of designers in the NKBA report say intentional zoning is here to stay. In a 1990s Cary kitchen, that usually means keeping the half-wall or peninsula between the kitchen and the family room and making it work harder.
  • Hide the small appliances. 85% of designers say cabinetry is being designed to hide appliances. Appliance garages and pantry pull-outs do that job, and you choose them when you order the cabinets.
  • Add a beverage station. Beverage areas are expected to be popular by 90% of designers, up from 85%. In many 1990s floor plans, a built-in desk nook or a dead corner converts well.
  • Two-tone it. 54% expect the island to be a different color from the perimeter, which is the lowest-risk way to try a darker stain or a green.
  • Put light in the cabinets. Under-cabinet lighting tops the fixture list at 87%. The wiring runs before the cabinets go up, so decide early.

A beverage station from one of our projects: wine storage, a stemware rack, and an under-counter refrigerator in one short run of cabinets.

Two local factors change the plan. First, the climate. North Carolina has a humid climate with very warm summers, according to the NOAA-funded North Carolina State Climate Summary. That makes a ducted range hood, vented outside, a better choice than a recirculating one. Second, outlets. Many older islands have none, and adding receptacles in an island is permitted electrical work in Cary (see permits). Ventilation also turns up in the NKBA report’s climate-resilience findings, where 53% of designers point to ventilation and air filtration systems.

Two-tone in practice: white uppers keep the room light while dark lower cabinets and the island carry the color.

Emin’s note

Most of the Cary kitchens we are asked to redo have a working layout and worn-out boxes. Before you pay to move a wall, ask us to draw the kitchen twice: once with the wall gone and once with it kept and the cabinets rebuilt around it. The second drawing wins more often than people expect, and if nothing else moves, replacing cabinets in place does not need a building permit in Cary.

NKBA has not published its 2027 Bath Trends Report yet. Last year’s edition came out in November, so for now the best national data is the NKBA 2026 Bath Trends Report, a survey of nearly 700 professionals released November 11, 2025, with figures as reported by PHCPPros. We will update this section when the 2027 bath findings come out.

  • Wood vanities over painted ones. Wood-faced vanities (62%) have overtaken painted vanities (53%), and the new warm stains fit that directly. Reeded fronts like Bertch’s Reedlyn are still a niche choice: the Houzz study below puts reeded or fluted doors on 4% of upgraded vanities, against 46% shaker.
  • A bigger shower instead of a tub. 55% of professionals say a larger shower matters more than having a bathtub. In many 1990s primary baths, that means the corner garden tub.
  • Calmer surfaces. Neutrals lead at 96%, and sage green is expected to be popular by 64%. On floors, 89% of the professionals surveyed say homeowners want smaller or no grout lines, and 80% expect large-format flooring to lead.
  • Aging in place, gradually. 32% of professionals call aging in place a mainstream trend and another 48% say it is on its way. A curbless shower, a roll-under vanity, and blocking for grab bars are simpler to plan in while the bathroom is open than to retrofit later.

The 2026 bath data in one room: a wood vanity, a larger shower in place of the tub, and a quiet palette with a green accent. Illustrative image.

Homeowner data points the same way. The 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, a survey of 1,619 homeowners fielded in August 2026 (full report), found that nearly half of renovations (49%) enlarge the shower, up 10 points from last year. A tub comes out in 26% of projects, and when it does, 79% of homeowners use the space to enlarge the shower. Shower-over-tub combinations fell to 5%. Wood tones are the most popular vanity color (31%), maple and white oak each account for 27% of solid wood vanity upgrades, and 61% of upgraded vanities are custom or semi-custom. Double sinks are in 64% of projects that upgrade the sink, up 17 points.

Planning ahead shows up too. In the Houzz study, 71% of renovating homeowners address special needs, and 43% of those focus on aging household members, rising to 55% when they plan for the future. Grab bars (63%), nonslip flooring (56%), and low-curb showers (55%) lead, with curbless showers at 32%. In a 1990s Cary primary bath, that usually means a low-curb or curbless shower where the corner tub was, plus blocking in the walls for grab bars.

Ventilation matters more here than in drier states. The ventilation fan is the system homeowners add most often in the Houzz study (59%). Cary lists bathroom exhaust fans among the work that needs a permit, and a properly ducted fan is the simplest protection for a new vanity and tile in a humid summer. If you are weighing a tub-to-shower swap, our guides to bathtub vs. shower and to converting a shower back into a tub cover the trade-offs, including resale with no tub in the house.

What a kitchen or bathroom remodel costs in Cary

Our 2026 kitchen remodeling cost guide publishes national ranges and a separate Northern Virginia line, and our 2026 bathroom remodeling cost guide publishes national tiers and size estimates. Neither publishes a Triangle figure, so the national ranges below are your planning baseline. Your quote will depend on your kitchen’s size, the cabinet line, and how much of the layout changes. The size and scope rows below matter more than any single average.

Kitchen remodel costs by kitchen size and finish level, national ranges from the USA Cabinet Store 2026 kitchen remodeling cost guide.
Kitchen size Basic / minor Mid-range High-end
Small (under 70 sq ft) $15,000 to $25,000 $25,000 to $45,000 $45,000 to $70,000+
Medium (70 to 150 sq ft) $18,000 to $35,000 $35,000 to $70,000 $70,000 to $120,000+
Large (over 150 sq ft) $25,000 to $45,000 $45,000 to $90,000 $90,000 to $175,000+

The national average kitchen remodel in the guide is $27,000 to $35,000, and most projects land between $15,000 and $75,000. Cabinetry is usually 30% to 40% of the budget, at roughly $100 to $300 per linear foot for stock, $200 to $650 for semi-custom, and $500 to $1,500+ for custom. Labor runs 20% to 35% of cosmetic projects and 35% to 50% of full remodels, as trade shortages keep pushing rates up. Layout changes add the most: relocating plumbing runs $3,000 to $8,000, moving a gas line $1,500 to $4,000, and removing a non-load-bearing wall $800 to $2,000.

Bathroom remodel costs by tier and bathroom type, national ranges from the USA Cabinet Store 2026 bathroom remodeling cost guide (updated October 21, 2026).
Project Typical national range
Cosmetic refresh, existing tile and layout stay $5,000 to $10,000
Mid-range remodel, same layout $16,000 to $28,000
High-end remodel, some plumbing moved $30,000 to $50,000
Luxury custom, layout changes $60,000 to $120,000+
Powder room or half bath, mid-range $7,000 to $14,000
5×7 small full bath, mid-range $14,000 to $24,000
5×8 hall or guest bath, mid-range $16,000 to $28,000
Primary bath, mid-range $29,000 to $50,000
Primary bath, high-end $51,000 to $80,000

The national average bathroom remodel in the guide is $16,500, with most between $8,000 and $45,000. The guide’s rule of thumb is about layout: keep the toilet, shower, and sink where they are and you stay in the first two tiers; move a drain or a wall and you are in the upper two. Labor is typically 40% to 65% of a bathroom budget, according to the Fixr and NerdWallet figures the guide cites, and most bathroom remodels need 2 to 6 weeks of construction and 2 to 4 months from signed contract to final walkthrough. For timing on the kitchen side, see how long a kitchen remodel takes.

Resale in the Triangle: which projects pay back

Cost is half the question in a market where the Census puts Cary’s median owner-occupied home value at $580,200 (QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024). Zonda’s 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Raleigh models standard projects and estimates how much of their cost they add at resale. For what a remodel costs, use the ranges from our cost guides above. What Zonda adds is the share of the cost that comes back when you sell.

Share of a midrange project’s cost recouped at resale in the Raleigh market, with the national figure for comparison, Cost vs. Value 2025 (Zonda).
Project (midrange) Cost recouped, Raleigh Cost recouped, national
Minor kitchen remodel 95.5% 112.9%
Major kitchen remodel 45.0% 50.9%
Bathroom remodel 67.3% 80.0%
Universal design bathroom 52.4% 61.2%

The pattern matches the national one, with noticeably lower percentages. Zonda’s minor kitchen remodel keeps the existing cabinet boxes and replaces the fronts, counters, appliances, and finishes in the same layout, and it comes much closer to paying for itself than the major remodel, which installs all new semi-custom cabinets and an island. So if resale within a few years is the goal, refresh rather than replace. If you are staying, the math changes, and new cabinets or a better layout may be worth more to you than to the next buyer. That matches the NKBA ranking, where 54% of designers name cabinet upgrades as the best return and 49% name layout changes.

Town of Cary permit basics for kitchens and baths

North Carolina sets the baseline. Under G.S. 160D-1110(c), work costing $40,000 or less in a single-family home does not need a building permit, unless it involves adding, repairing, or replacing load-bearing structure, adding or redesigning plumbing, adding, replacing, or redesigning heating, air-conditioning, or electrical wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment (other than like-kind replacement of electrical devices and light fixtures), or a few other exceptions such as new roofing. In practice, most kitchen and bath remodels trip at least one of those exceptions. The Town of Cary’s permit FAQ spells out what that means at home.

Common kitchen and bath tasks and whether the Town of Cary requires a permit, based on the Town’s residential permit FAQ (October 2026). Confirm your own scope with Cary Inspections and Permits.
Task Permit needed? Why
Replace cabinets in the same layout No building permit Cary lists cabinets and casework as cosmetic replacement
Install an island or peninsula cabinet Yes Listed by the Town as permitted work
Add or move a sink, or add an ice-maker or gas line Yes (plumbing or gas) Adds or changes plumbing design
Add outlets or hard-wired under-cabinet lighting Yes (electrical) New wiring or devices
Add or move a range hood or bathroom exhaust fan Yes Listed by the Town
New shower pan Yes Listed by the Town
Swap a faucet, toilet, or light fixture in place No Like-kind replacement; an electrical swap qualifies only when it is not done within the wall or ceiling cavity
New flooring, tile, or paint No Floor and wall coverings are exempt
Remove, add, or move any wall Yes Cary lists interior wall demolition or addition; load-bearing walls are structural

Cary’s Inspections and Permits team takes applications online. Small interior alterations under 1,500 square feet are eligible for its SPOTS review, where the Town’s residential permitting guide says typical permitting time is less than a week. The same guide says the Town can complete an inspection within one to two business days more than 95% of the time (311, or 919-469-4000 from outside town limits). Under the Town’s FY2027 adopted fee schedule, which applies to the fiscal year that began July 1, 2026, a residential alteration permit costs $0.30 per square foot with a $125 minimum, and trade fees for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work are added at $0.15 per square foot, also with a $125 minimum. The schedule charges double permit fees for work started without a permit. Fees change each July, so check the current schedule when you apply.

Two more rules apply. A contractor needs a North Carolina general contractor license for any project of $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1). And the Town of Cary’s permit FAQ says homeowners can do their own building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work, but the home must be the owner’s primary residence for at least 12 months after the work is finished. The same permitting guide notes that while a contractor can pull permits as the owner’s agent, making sure they are pulled is the homeowner’s responsibility. Once a permitted interior alteration is done, the Town requires working smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide alarm. The 2018 North Carolina codes are still in force, and the Town says the 2024 codes “will not take effect until after March 1, 2027” (Town of Cary, NC building codes). This is general information, not legal advice.

Emin’s note

If your plan adds an island, assume you need a permit. Cary lists island and peninsula cabinets by name, and an island almost always brings outlets with it. It surprises a lot of homeowners who assume cabinets never need one. We build the permit into the schedule from the first drawing so it never holds up installation.

Cary permits at a glance. Replacing cabinets in place is cosmetic; adding an island, moving a sink, or adding a fan is not.

What Triangle homeowners say about remodeling

We read through kitchen and bath threads from 2025 and 2026 on r/raleigh and r/cary to see what local homeowners actually run into. The quotes below are verbatim and linked to the threads; the responses are ours.

Is $60,000 enough?

“I’m planning for a budget of $60k, with new cabinets, countertops, a small non-load-bearing wall removal, and popcorn ceiling covering.”

— u/Dangerous-Rice44, r/raleigh

“Though I’m not sure $60k is realistic for all that you are doing if you are using a reputable contractor.”

— u/Itstimeforcookies19, replying, r/raleigh

It depends on the kitchen’s size. Our cost guide puts a mid-range remodel of a medium kitchen (70 to 150 square feet) at $35,000 to $70,000 nationally, and removing a non-load-bearing wall at $800 to $2,000. So $60,000 is a realistic number for a medium kitchen with semi-custom cabinets. For a large kitchen, where mid-range runs $45,000 to $90,000, it gets tight, and the cabinet line becomes the main lever.

Crews that don’t show up

“A problem everyone in the market is having is workers are just not showing up. So costs and time lines and start dates are all going up being extended.”

— u/LRS_David, r/raleigh

Our cost guide treats the labor shortage as a lasting problem, and it is one reason labor now runs 35% to 50% of a full remodel. Two things help. One team should own design, ordering, and installation, and the cabinets should be ordered early enough that the crew is never waiting on boxes. Get the schedule in writing.

Bringing a 1980s house into the 2020s

“took our 1980s home and brought into the 2020s.”

— u/Dorkalton, r/cary

“build a 3d rendering of the space to show the transition from a segmented to open concept.”

— u/Dorkalton, r/cary

That is the classic Cary project, and the 3D step is the one to insist on. In 2027 the opening does not have to be all or nothing. With 81% of designers backing defined zones, a wider cased opening or a peninsula often gives you the sightlines without losing the wall that holds your upper cabinets. Our Cary showroom draws both versions in the free consultation.

And a PERMIT

“You’ll also need a plumber, electrician, and possibly an HVAC contractor. And a PERMIT.”

— u/mrsunshine113, r/cary

Exactly right, and it applies to more kitchens than people think, because adding an island, outlets, or a vented hood all count. See the permit table above. Cary handles permit status and inspection results online, so ask any contractor you are vetting for permit numbers from recent local jobs.

The shower-quote shock

“I can’t stomach spending new car money for a basic shower.”

— u/Glittering-Sky-9226, after a $23,000 tub-to-shower quote, r/raleigh

Tub-to-shower quotes vary because the scope varies. Our bathroom cost guide puts a full mid-range remodel of a 5-by-8 hall bath in the same layout at $16,000 to $28,000, and moving a drain or a wall puts a project in the upper tiers, from $30,000. Building a new wall, moving the valve, and relocating drains each add cost. Ask for a line-item quote so you can see which of those you are paying for.

Remodeling for the next 20 years

“In the middle of a total redo to make the master bath fully accessible.”

— u/voodoodollbabie, who said the project is costing $50,000, r/cary

That sits at the top of our mid-range primary-bath range of $29,000 to $50,000. More homeowners are planning this way. In the Houzz study, 55% of homeowners addressing special needs plan for an aging household member’s future needs, up 6 points from last year. Zonda’s Raleigh data shows a universal design bathroom recouping 52.4% at resale, which is lower than a standard bath, so do it because you will use it. The new Universal Design cabinets from Mantra make the vanity side of that easier.

A note on one comment

“USA cabinets in Cary. professional, great service and excellent reviews online.”

— u/coolsunshine, r/cary

It is one comment in a thread that recommends many other firms. Whoever you hire, check recent references, the license number, and the permits on their last few jobs.

How to get the most out of a Cary showroom visit

  • Measure first. Wall lengths, ceiling height, and where the windows, doors, sink, and range sit. A phone photo of each wall helps more than a sketch.
  • Bring your fixed pieces. A floor sample or photo, the countertop you like, and your appliance model numbers, especially for a panel-ready refrigerator or dishwasher.
  • Know your tier. Decide roughly whether you are in the value, semi-custom, or custom range. It narrows nine lines to two or three in the first ten minutes.
  • List what you will change. An island, a moved sink, a vented hood, or a new fan affects the permit and the schedule, so say so on day one.
  • Ask about lead time with the price. A three-week Fabuwood order and a 14-week Bauformat order are different projects, even at a similar budget.
  • Ask for the new finishes by name. Bourbon, Steam, the Fabuwood Designer stains, and the Garrett oaks can be shown in the showroom or ordered in as sample doors.

Frequently asked questions for Kitchen and Bath Remodeling Cary NC

What is the average cost of a kitchen remodel in North Carolina?

The average cost of a kitchen remodel is $27,000 to $35,000 nationally in our 2026 kitchen remodeling cost guide, with most projects between $15,000 and $75,000. The guide does not publish a separate North Carolina figure, so use the national ranges as your baseline and get a quote for your own kitchen.

Is $30,000 enough to remodel a kitchen?

For a basic remodel, yes. Our 2026 cost guide puts a basic remodel of a medium kitchen (70 to 150 square feet) at $18,000 to $35,000 nationally. At that level the layout stays and the existing cabinets are refinished or refaced instead of replaced. New cabinets put a medium kitchen in the mid-range tier, at $35,000 to $70,000, though in a small kitchen under 70 square feet the guide puts a mid-range remodel with new cabinets and appliances at $25,000 to $45,000. Layout changes add more: relocating plumbing runs $3,000 to $8,000 and moving a gas line $1,500 to $4,000.

What is the most expensive part of redoing a kitchen?

Cabinetry is the largest material cost in almost every kitchen. It is usually 30% to 40% of the budget, at roughly $100 to $300 per linear foot for stock cabinets, $200 to $650 for semi-custom, and $500 to $1,500 or more for custom. Labor is the other big share, at 35% to 50% of a full remodel in 2026, according to our cost guide.

What adds the most value to a kitchen?

Cabinet upgrades rank first in the NKBA 2027 Kitchen Trends Report, named by 54% of designers as the best return, followed by layout changes at 49%. In the Raleigh market, Zonda’s 2025 Cost vs. Value report estimates that a midrange minor kitchen remodel, which keeps the existing cabinet boxes and replaces the fronts, recoups 95.5% of its cost at resale, compared with 45.0% for a major kitchen remodel with all new cabinets.

How much should I pay for a bathroom remodel?

Our 2026 bathroom remodeling cost guide puts the national average at $16,500, with most projects between $8,000 and $45,000. A cosmetic refresh runs $5,000 to $10,000, a mid-range remodel of a hall or guest bath $16,000 to $28,000, a high-end remodel $30,000 to $50,000, and a mid-range primary bath $29,000 to $50,000.

Is $10,000 enough for a bathroom remodel?

For a thorough refresh, yes. Our 2026 cost guide puts a refresh with professional installation (new vanity and top, toilet, faucets, lighting, and flooring) at $5,000 to $10,000, with the shower or tub surround kept or refinished. A full mid-range remodel of a 5-by-8 hall bath runs $16,000 to $28,000, so $10,000 will not cover full demolition, new tile, or moved plumbing.

What adds the most value to a bathroom?

A mid-range remodel that keeps the layout. Our bathroom cost guide notes that a mid-range bathroom remodel recouped 80% of its cost nationally in the Cost vs. Value Report 2025, while upscale remodels recouped 42%, so a mid-range, same-layout remodel is the safer bet if you plan to sell within a few years. In the Raleigh market, Zonda’s 2025 report estimates a midrange bathroom remodel recoups 67.3%.

According to the NKBA 2026 Bath Trends Report, wood-faced vanities (62%) have overtaken painted ones (53%), 55% of professionals say a larger shower matters more than a bathtub, neutrals lead color at 96% with sage green at 64%, and 89% say homeowners want smaller or no grout lines. Homeowner data from the 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study points the same way: 49% of renovations enlarge the shower, a tub comes out in 26% of projects, and double sinks are in 64% of sink upgrades. NKBA has not released its 2027 bath report yet.

What are the design trends for 2027?

For kitchens, the NKBA 2027 Kitchen Trends Report points to zoned layouts instead of fully open plans (81%), cabinetry that hides appliances (85%), beverage areas (90%), white oak as the top wood (49%), and quartzite (78%) edging quartz (74%). This year’s cabinet releases follow the same direction, with warm wood stains such as Showplace Bourbon and Fabuwood Natural Oak and more frameless options.

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?

In Cary, replacing cabinets in the same layout does not need a building permit, but adding an island or peninsula, removing or adding a wall, adding or moving a sink, adding outlets or hard-wired lighting, or adding a range hood does. North Carolina law exempts work costing $40,000 or less only when it involves no load-bearing structural work, no added or redesigned plumbing, and no added, replaced, or redesigned heating, air-conditioning, or electrical wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment, apart from like-kind swaps of electrical devices and light fixtures.

What happens if an inspector finds unpermitted work?

In Cary, the Town’s FY2027 fee schedule charges double permit fees for work started without a permit, and the Town’s guide to work done without a permit says checking fire stopping and fire blocking may require opening sample areas of walls or ceilings. It is cheaper to permit the work before it starts.

How this guide was developed: cabinet releases were checked on each manufacturer’s website and in trade press on October 20, 2026; undated items are labeled as such. Every remodel cost figure comes from our own published 2026 kitchen and bathroom cost guides, re-checked against both guides on October 27, 2026; resale percentages come from Zonda’s 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Raleigh. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau. Permit rules and fees come from North Carolina statutes and the Town of Cary’s published permit FAQ, permitting guide, and FY2027 adopted fee schedule. Trend percentages are from NKBA’s 2027 kitchen and 2026 bath reports as publicly summarized, and from the 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study. The design advice is ours.
