Once your design and estimate are approved, your kitchen moves from plan to build. On-site work usually runs 2 to 4 weeks for a cosmetic update, 6 to 10 weeks for a mid-range remodel and 12 to 20+ weeks for a high-end renovation. This page covers how to prepare your home, what happens at each stage, and who to call when something comes up.

Your Kitchen Remodel

From approved plan to finished kitchen

You made it through the design meetings and the hard decisions. Now the build starts, and with it a stretch of dust, noise and a kitchen you can’t cook in. That part is normal. What changes the experience is knowing the order of the work, which days need you at home, and having one person to call. USA Cabinet Store is a cabinet store, a design studio and a kitchen remodeling contractor under one name, so the designer who drew your kitchen stays on it through construction and the final walkthrough. Here is how the kitchen remodel process runs once your project begins.

Why It Goes Smoother

The build is easier when one company owns it

Most kitchen projects stall at the handoff between the company that sold the cabinets and the contractor who installs them. A door shows up damaged, a filler is the wrong size, and each side points at the other. With us there is no other side. Your cabinets come from our showroom lines, our own crew installs them, and your designer coordinates both.

A real cabinet store

We sell what we install

Plywood construction with solid wood frames or full-access frameless boxes, dovetail drawers and full-extension glides, in custom, semi-custom and stock lines. When a part needs replacing, we reorder it ourselves.

One dedicated designer

Your designer stays on the job

The person who built your 3D design answers your questions during construction and stays in touch with the site team, so design intent carries through to the install.

Single-source accountability

One company to hold responsible

Design, cabinetry, countertops and installation are all ours. If something goes wrong, there is exactly one team responsible for putting it right.

You hire the company that designs, supplies and builds your kitchen, not a chain of subcontractors.

From our founder
“When the cabinet company and the contractor are two different businesses, the homeowner ends up managing the gap between them. We built USA Cabinet Store to close that gap. One dedicated designer owns your project from the first 3D rendering to the final walkthrough, and the cabinets, the countertops and the construction are all ours. That is what single-source accountability means: one team you can hold responsible for the whole kitchen.”

During Construction

Remove the uncertainty once work starts

The worries change once the crew arrives. They stop being about price and style and start being about silence, dust and surprises. Here is how our process answers the ones we hear most.

“We've gone two weeks with no update and half a kitchen.”

One person who answers

Your designer stays your contact through construction, not just design. A project binder on site lists the phone number of every team member working in your home.

“Communication doesn't come up until there's an issue.”

Decisions booked in advance

Cabinet delivery, countertop measuring and the final walkthrough are scheduled with you ahead of time, so the big calls never get made without you.

“What's hiding behind my walls?”

Hidden conditions handled in the open

If we open a wall and find a drain in the soffit, old wiring, surprise ductwork or water damage, we show you, then outline the cost and time to fix it before work continues.

“They gouged my wood floors by dragging the refrigerator across them.”

Your home protected
Plastic walls and coverings go up before demolition, and the crew keeps a clean worksite so dust and damage stay inside the work zone.

“Incorrect cabinet material, wrong color, shipped wrong day and with damage.”

Fixed by the people who sold them
Products occasionally arrive damaged in transit or built wrong. Because the cabinets come from our own store and our own crew installs them, we handle the reorder with the manufacturer and reschedule the install ourselves. You never referee a supplier and a contractor.

“I can't wait home all day for a truck.”

Delivery windows you can plan around

White-glove delivery sends a 3-hour window the night before, a 2-hour window that morning and a text an hour out. If the driver runs late, you hear about it.

“Contractor is calling code required work a change order.”

Change orders in writing, first

Extra work is written up and priced by a USA Cabinet Store team member, signed by you and filed in the project binder before anyone starts it. Installers and trades can’t approve extras on the spot.

“Contractor only works 2-4 hours a day (no ETAs in contract).”

A schedule you can ask about

Your designer walks you through the timeline. When a day passes with nobody on site, it’s usually an inspection, countertop fabrication or a delivery in the queue, and you can always ask for the reason and the next date.

“Will the last few details ever get finished?”

A punch list that closes the job

Keep a short list of anything that bugs you, like a door that sticks. We walk the finished kitchen together and work through every item on it.

Quotes in quotation marks that name a specific problem are word for word from homeowner posts on r/HomeImprovement and r/legaladvice (2025–2026). The others are the worries our designers hear most.

The Build · 6 Stages

What happens after you approve the design

Every kitchen follows the same order of work. Durations below are typical ranges; your designer gives you your own schedule. For the full week-by-week picture, read how long a kitchen remodel takes.

FAQ

Kitchen remodel questions, answered

Living at home, change orders, hidden damage and the final walkthrough.

What should I expect during a kitchen remodel?
Expect a few weeks without a working kitchen, some dust and noise, and a set order of work: demolition, rough-in and inspections, cabinet installation, countertop templating and installation, then backsplash, finishes and a final walkthrough. Once work starts, a cosmetic update usually runs 2 to 4 weeks, a mid-range remodel 6 to 10 weeks and a high-end renovation 12 to 20+ weeks. Your designer stays your point of contact the whole way.
Can I live in my home during a kitchen remodel?

Yes. Most of our clients stay home. You’ll lose the kitchen during parts of construction, so set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, hot plate, toaster oven, coffee maker and a sink you can use, and keep the refrigerator running nearby. Your project manager tells you ahead of time when the kitchen will be offline.

How do I prepare my house for a kitchen remodel?
Empty and label your cabinets, set up a temporary kitchen, clear art and breakables out of nearby rooms, pick a climate-controlled staging area for cabinets and appliances, and buy a pack of furnace filters to change weekly. A lock box lets the installers in while you’re at work.
Why are there days when no one is working on my kitchen?
Some stages wait on something outside your house: an inspection, a product delivery, or countertop fabrication, which takes about 1 to 3 weeks after the tops are measured. If a quiet day surprises you, ask your designer. You’ll get the reason and the next date.
What happens if you find problems behind the walls?
It happens in construction. We sometimes find a drain pipe in a soffit, unexpected ductwork, water damage or outdated wiring. We review it with you and outline the cost and time needed to fix it, whether to make the design work or to meet building code, before work continues. A contingency of 10 to 20% of your budget covers most of these surprises.
How do change orders work?
Contact your designer. A USA Cabinet Store team member writes up the added work and its cost, you both sign it, and it goes in the project binder on site. Payment for a change order is due in full before that work starts, and depending on the change, the finish date may move. Installers and trades on site can’t quote or approve change orders.
How much contingency should I budget for a kitchen remodel?
Plan a contingency of 10 to 20% of your budget, and aim for the top of that range in an older home or if you’re moving walls or plumbing. Permits typically add $200 to $1,500 depending on your jurisdiction and scope. See our 2026 kitchen remodel cost guide for full ranges.
Do I need to be home during the remodel?
Not every day. Be home, or have another decision maker there, for cabinet and appliance delivery, the countertop measurement and the final walkthrough, and stay reachable for decisions about hidden conditions or changes. Delivery comes with a 3-hour window the night before and a 2-hour window that morning by text and email.
What happens at the final walkthrough?
Your project manager walks the kitchen with you and checks every cabinet, fixture and finish. Anything you’ve noticed, like a door out of alignment, goes on the punch list and gets adjusted. Materials and workmanship are backed by manufacturer warranties and our own service guarantee.
