Here is the part most cabinet owners never hear until it is too late: when humidity swells your doors or opens up joint lines, the manufacturer calls that normal wood behavior. The numbers: what to keep your kitchen at
Every authority that has published a number lands in the same narrow band. The EPA says indoor relative humidity should stay below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50, because mold needs nothing more than moisture and an organic surface to grow. Cabinet manufacturers stretch that ceiling only slightly.

So the working target is simple. Keep the needle between 30 and 50, never let summer push past 55, never let winter fall below 30, and you are inside every spec at once. Kitchens run more humid than the rest of the house because they make their own steam, which is why the room with the most wood in it is also the room with the worst air for wood.
Why humidity moves wood at all
Wood never stops being a sponge. Long after it is cut, dried, machined and finished, it keeps trading moisture with the air around it until the two reach a balance point. Wood scientists call that the equilibrium moisture content. Raise the room’s humidity and the wood slowly absorbs moisture and expands, mostly across the grain. Drop the humidity and it releases moisture and shrinks back. A finish slows this exchange down. Nothing stops it.
Cabinet makers build for this. A five-piece door holds its center panel in an oversized groove specifically so the panel can float as it expands and contracts. That is engineering for movement, not prevention of it. When the swing gets too wide, the built-in allowance runs out. Doors bind against face frames. Mitered corners pull apart, which is why Diamond Cabinets specifically flags joint separation “especially in mitered doors”. Painted doors show it fastest of all, because the paint film bridges the joint between panel and frame, and the first thing a moving panel does is crack that bridge into a visible hairline.
Helen’s field tip
A thin cracked line in the paint where the door frame meets the center panel scares a lot of homeowners into thinking the door failed. Nine times out of ten it is the panel moving with the seasons under a paint film that cannot stretch. Watch it through one full winter and summer before you worry. If it stays a hairline, it is cosmetic.
Is it humidity or a leak? The 60-second test
This is the single most useful diagnostic in this article, and almost nobody runs it before buying products. Humidity is air. Air touches every cabinet in the room roughly equally. Water is local. It touches one spot, hard. So look at the pattern, not the symptom.

Why this matters: the two problems have opposite fixes. We regularly meet homeowners who spent a summer running dehumidifiers at a swollen sink base cabinet that had a slow supply-line drip behind it the entire time. The air was never the problem. Rule out water first, every time, and start with the cabinet under the sink.
The warning signs, from earliest to latest
Humidity damage announces itself in a fairly reliable order. Catch it in the first two stages and everything reverses on its own once the air is fixed. The later stages are permanent.
Stage one, fully reversible. Doors need a firmer pull in August. Drawers whisper against their openings. A pair of butt doors meets slightly proud in the middle. Wood has absorbed moisture and expanded within its allowance. When the air dries, it goes back.
Stage two, still reversible. Sticking you now notice daily. Hinges that need seasonal adjustment. Visible joint lines on painted doors. Diamond Cabinets calls these reactions normal and suggests a hinge tweak can carry you through the season. Fix the air and stop here.
Stage three, permanent. Mitered corners that have pulled open and stay open. Bowed stiles and rails. Veneer lifting at edges. Particle board that has swollen and crumbles at a fingernail. MDF that has puffed up around a screw. Swelling that happens fast or goes too far breaks glue lines and crushes wood fibers, and dried-out wood does not un-crush. This is repair or replacement territory.
Stage four, health territory. A musty smell that greets you when a door opens, or visible mold. The EPA’s position is blunt: mold grows on virtually any organic material given moisture and oxygen, and controlling moisture is the only real control. At this stage you are not protecting cabinets anymore, you are remediating a moisture problem that happens to include cabinets. For growth beyond a small cleanable patch, bring in a professional mold removal and remediation service.
The daily habits that do 80 percent of the work
None of these cost money. Together they remove most of the moisture a kitchen generates before it ever reaches the wood.
Run the range hood every single time you cook. Not just for smoke and smells. A pot of pasta releases a surprising amount of water into the air, and the cabinets flanking the range catch it first. Turn the fan on when the burner goes on and leave it running 10 to 15 minutes after you finish, the same way a bathroom fan should outlast the shower. If your hood recirculates instead of venting outside, it is filtering grease but doing very little for moisture, which is worth knowing before you trust it.
Put lids on pots. A lidded pot boils faster, uses less energy and releases a fraction of the steam. This is the cheapest humidity control ever invented.
Wipe standing water immediately, and blot rather than scrub. Fabuwood, another line we carry, puts it in their care instructions: excess water should be dried immediately, and a wet surface should be blotted instead of wiped so you are lifting water off the finish rather than driving it into seams. Around the sink, the dishwasher edge and the coffee station, treat standing water like something with a timer on it.
Give the room five minutes of air after heavy cooking. Crack a window or leave the hood running. A short air change resets the room faster than any absorber product will.
Appliance steam: the damage nobody attributes correctly
When a wall cabinet’s bottom edge starts peeling and the finish clouds, homeowners blame the cabinet. Look at what lives underneath it instead.
The kettle and the coffee maker. Both are steam machines that most people park directly under an upper cabinet. That bottom edge takes a concentrated hot-steam hit every morning, on a part of the door that is often the least-finished surface on the whole cabinet. Pull the appliance to the counter’s front edge when it runs, or move it out from under the uppers entirely.
The dishwasher. Many models vent steam at the end of the cycle, right at the toe of the adjacent cabinet, and opening the door mid-cycle releases a cloud of it straight up at the counter overhang and doors. Let the cycle finish and cool before opening, and if you run it overnight, the steam release happens while no fan is running. Once a month, run your hand along the cabinet edges beside the dishwasher. If they ever feel damp after a cycle, the door seal or vent needs attention.
The self-cleaning oven and the air fryer. A self-clean cycle pushes out heat, smoke and moisture for hours. An air fryer parked tight under an upper does a smaller version of the same thing. Run the hood during both.

Hygrometers, dehumidifiers and your HVAC
Start with the $15 instrument. A digital hygrometer is the whole game, because every other decision depends on a number you currently do not have. Put one on the kitchen counter, away from the stove and the sink, and glance at it for a week. Many people discover their kitchen already sits at 45 percent and needs nothing. Others discover an August afternoon reading of 68 and finally have an explanation for the sticking doors.
Air conditioning is already a dehumidifier. Running the AC in humid months does double duty, which is why Diamond Cabinets’ guidance leads with running your HVAC consistently rather than buying gadgets. Showplace goes further for seasonal properties: heat and cool the house even when nobody is living in it, because an unconditioned coastal house in July is a wood-swelling chamber.
A portable dehumidifier earns its place when the hygrometer stays above 55 despite the AC, which is common in basements, coastal markets and Gulf climates. Set its humidistat to hold 45 to 50 and let it cycle. You do not need to chase 30.
Absorber products inside cabinets are a niche tool, not a fix. A desiccant pouch can help a closed, rarely-opened cabinet in a damp corner, and renters with no HVAC control sometimes have no better option. But a small box of crystals cannot dehumidify a room, and anything chemical should stay out of cabinets that hold food. If an absorber fills with water quickly, that is not success, that is a measurement telling you the room itself needs fixing.
The sink base: the cabinet that fails first
Ask any installer which cabinet dies first in an otherwise healthy kitchen and you will get the same answer. The sink base lives with supply lines, drain connections, a garbage disposal, a dark enclosed interior and a steady drip risk, all at once. It deserves its own routine.
Line the floor. A waterproof tray or mat sized to the cabinet floor catches the slow drip you have not noticed yet and holds it where you will see it. This is a \$20 part protecting a cabinet that costs hundreds to replace.
Look inside monthly. Run a dry hand along the supply lines and around the drain trap. Check the mat for standing water and the back corners for dark staining. Thirty seconds, first weekend of the month.
Act on the 24-to-48-hour rule. The EPA’s mold guidance is that wet materials need to be dried within 24 to 48 hours to head off mold growth. A sink base that got soaked on Friday cannot wait for next weekend. Empty it, dry it, fan it, and find the source.
Winter is the other direction
Protecting cabinets from humidity is really protecting them from swings in both directions, and the damaging half of the year in northern Virginia and Maryland is often January, not July. Heated indoor air can be desert-dry. Diamond Cabinets puts the shrinkage threshold below 20 percent relative humidity, and a furnace running hard can push a house there for weeks.
Dry-air symptoms look different from summer’s. Nothing sticks. Instead, center panels contract and expose unfinished stripes at their edges, hairline cracks open along paint joints, and in bad cases stiles bow or glue joints stress. If your hygrometer reads below 30 for days at a stretch, a humidifier, whether a portable unit or one on the furnace, is protecting your cabinets exactly as much as the summer dehumidifier does. The goal is not a season, it is a flat line: the same 30 to 50 band, twelve months a year. Wood is happiest when nothing changes.
If you are choosing cabinets: materials that shrug off humidity
Habits protect the cabinets you have. Material choice protects the ones you are about to buy, and it is the difference between a kitchen that shrugs off a humid decade and one that swells at the first wet summer.

Two notes from the field. First, a good finish on all six sides matters as much as the material itself, and better lines finish the parts you never see. Second, no material choice excuses a leak. Plywood survives moisture exposure long enough for you to fix the problem. It is not a submarine. New cabinets: protection starts before installation
If a remodel is in your near future, two scheduling details protect the cabinets before a single door is hung, and both come straight from manufacturer installation guidance.
Let the cabinets acclimate. Diamond’s guidance is to give cabinets a few days inside the conditioned house before installation, so the wood reaches equilibrium with your air rather than the warehouse’s. Cabinets installed straight off a truck into a different climate do their adjusting after they are screwed to the wall, which is exactly when you want them stable.
Sequence the wet trades first. Drywall mud, fresh paint and new concrete all dump moisture into a house for days. Manufacturer guidance says those jobs finish and dry before cabinets arrive. A remodel that hangs doors while the mud is still curing bakes a humidity spike into the wood’s first week. This is standard sequencing on our installations, and it is a fair question to ask any contractor you hire.
What your warranty will not cover, in writing
This is the section that changes how seriously people take the rest of the article. Cabinet warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. Wood responding to the air in your house is neither. Showplace states that dimensional changes from humidity “are inherent characteristics of wood, are not considered flaws, and are not covered under the Showplace warranty.” Diamond’s guide says the same thing in different words: these reactions are normal and are not a fault of the cabinetry.
Read that the way an insurer would. If your kitchen spends summers at 70 percent humidity and a door warps, the manufacturer’s position, reasonably, is that the environment did it. The 30-to-50 band is not a suggestion for perfectionists. It is effectively the condition under which your warranty means what you think it means. A $15 hygrometer is the cheapest warranty protection you will ever buy.
What not to do
Do not drill ventilation holes in your cabinets. This advice circulates online, and an older version of this very article once mentioned it. We no longer recommend it, and we want to be direct about why: holes breach the finish and expose raw core material, which absorbs moisture faster than any surface you just “ventilated,” and the modification itself can void a warranty. If a cabinet interior stays damp, the moisture source is the problem, not the airflow.
Do not soak wood while cleaning it. A dripping rag is a small controlled flood. Fabuwood’s care rule applies to every brand: damp cloth, mild cleaner applied to the cloth rather than sprayed on the wood, dry immediately.
Do not over-correct into desert air. Running dehumidification hard enough to pin the house at 20 percent trades summer swelling for winter-style shrinkage, cracks and open joints. The target is the middle of the band, not the bottom of it.
Do not park chemical absorbers next to food, and do not mistake a full absorber for a solved problem. It is a symptom gauge in a box.

Our answer: caulking every seam is not realistic, but the panic is not warranted either. One widely echoed reply in that same thread said it well: most kitchen cabinets these days are particle board with veneer, and that does not mean they are going to disintegrate tomorrow. Particle board fails from standing water and sustained damp, not from existing. Keep liquid water off it, hold the room at 30 to 50 percent, line the sink base, and those boxes can serve for many years. Just know the material has no second chances once it swells.

Our answer: the sharpest reply in that thread looked at the photos and asked what had been leaking in that spot, then said “this isn’t a cabinet issue, this is a water issue.” The homeowner checked, and confirmed a dishwasher that may have been leaking, with mold behind it. That is the diagnostic from our 60-second test in the wild. Upgrade to plywood boxes for the next kitchen, absolutely. But fix the leak pattern first, or the new kitchen inherits the old problem.
When protection is too late, and what happens next
Be honest with yourself about stage three. Adjusting hinges on a warped door buys a season, not a fix. Veneer that has lifted, board that has swollen and crumbled, or mold that keeps returning inside a cabinet means the structure has changed, and no amount of air control un-swells it. Sometimes the answer is replacing two damaged base cabinets and matching the doors. Sometimes, especially when the boxes were builder-grade to begin with, the honest math favors a new kitchen with plywood construction and a layout that puts steam where it cannot hurt anything.
